CCF Edinburgh’s Branch Manager: “It’s all about people, no matter the industry”

6th Mar 2023

Branch Manager at the recently relocated CCF Edinburgh branch, Marie Burke, joined CCF in April 2021. She moved to the construction industry after 20 years in retail, a move she says is the ‘best move ever.’

Twelve months on and Marie has played a fundamental role in the branch relocation which was driven by an increase in construction demand and the need for more storage capacity. However, she says the people are what make her job so rewarding. Read on to find out why.

How did you find the move from retail to CCF?

The only concern I had prior to CCF was how I would be received in this new sector, particularly being a woman from a fashion retail background. But I had no real reservations about the change in industry. I’d already made the decision to move from retail and the Branch Manager job description allowed me to utilise my transferable skills.

I feel I have had the best possible welcome to CCF. This includes all the individuals I have met or spent time with, from colleagues and suppliers to customers, everyone has been so supportive of me joining from out of Industry.

Coming to CCF with 18 years’ of experience in a managerial role, I feel I’m respected amongst my peers and my opinion counts. Plus, I feel I am contributing to the future of the business and Travis Perkins Group.

What does your day-to-day role include?

As a Branch Manager I’m responsible for overseeing operations at CCF Edinburgh. This mostly involves ensuring sufficient stock of insulation, fire protection, ceilings & dry lining solutions as well as supervising the team to ensure customer expectations are met. It’s true what they say though, no day looks the same.

One of the most fundamental parts of my role is building relationships. Engaging with colleagues, customers and suppliers is ultimately what I love most about what I do. As humans, we’re social creatures so it’s a pleasure to speak to and collaborate with such a variety of individuals.

Why is relationship building so important?

Put simply, I truly believe we are better together. I care deeply about both customers and colleagues, and think relationships are pivotal to doing business well. To nurture the best team and achieve the best results, partnerships and communications are key. Even in my personal life, this is a core value of mine and I aim to instil this within my team.

Have you got any advice for someone thinking of joining CCF?

For anyone considering a career at CCF, or in the wider construction industry, I’d encourage them to seize the day and do it. If you have the skills, then the sector-specific knowledge will come with time. Plus, when starting out you can soak up knowledge from the talented team around you.

I have no regrets about making the jump and believe there are so many different roles and opportunities within this thriving Group!
